Neighbourhood guide  /  North York

Willowdale

The centre of North York — condominium towers on Yonge, large houses on the streets behind.

Willowdale is the heart of North York and one of the clearest examples in the city of two markets sitting side by side. Along Yonge Street there is a dense corridor of condominium towers, offices and civic buildings served by two subway stations. A block east or west, the character changes completely: quiet residential streets of postwar bungalows, many now replaced by substantial custom houses on the same generous lots. That rebuilding has been running for two decades and continues. The area has a large Korean, Chinese and Iranian population and commercial strips that reflect it.
