Malvern was developed from the seventies as a planned community on former farmland, and it is one of the largest and most diverse neighbourhoods in the city — a substantial South Asian, Caribbean and Sri Lankan Tamil population, with commercial strips that reflect it. Housing is a mix of detached and semi-detached subdivision homes, townhouse complexes and rental apartment buildings, generally offering more space for the price than anywhere closer to downtown. The community is well served by schools, recreation centres and the Malvern Town Centre.
