Neighbourhood guide  /  Downtown & Central

Queen West

Galleries, shops and lofts along one of the city’s best-known streets.

Queen West proper — the stretch between University and Bathurst — is the older, more established half of the Queen Street corridor. Retail at grade is a mix of chains and independents, and above it sit apartments, loft conversions and the upper floors of Victorian commercial buildings. It is a genuinely walkable stretch with Trinity Bellwoods at its western end and the shopping district to the east. Residential inventory is thinner than in the tower neighbourhoods nearby, which keeps prices firm for the units that do come up. Buyers here tend to have chosen the street first and the unit second.

Housing stock

Loft conversions, apartments above retail, some newer mid-rise; very little detached housing.

Who buys here

Creative professionals, first-time buyers stretching for location, and long-tenured owners who rarely sell.

Transit

The 501 Queen streetcar; Osgoode and St Patrick stations a few minutes north.

Worth checking

Units above active retail can carry noise and extraction issues. Ask what operates below before you offer.
