New Toronto was built as an industrial town — it was incorporated as one and named accordingly — and its housing was built for the people who worked in the plants along the lake. What remains is a compact grid of modest detached and semi-detached houses on small lots, historically among the most affordable freehold stock in the city. The industry has largely gone, replaced in part by parkland along the waterfront, and the neighbourhood has drawn steady interest from buyers priced out of the areas to the east. Lakeshore Boulevard is the commercial spine and is changing gradually.
