East York was an independent borough until amalgamation and it still reads as one — a large area of postwar and interwar housing north of the Danforth, with wide streets, mature trees and a civic character distinct from the city that absorbed it. The housing is predominantly detached and semi-detached bungalows and two-storey homes on regular lots with private drives. It has long been a practical choice for families who want space and parking within reasonable reach of downtown, and it is currently among the more active areas in the east end for additions and rebuilds.
